DONALD and "PETE"

This Art Corner setup just in... it's going to the restorer tomorrow.

The Donald cel is easy, from "Donald In Mathmagicland."

But PegLeg Pete playing the trombone? Not so easy, and it's not from "Trombone Trouble."

Anyone?

Poppins Carpetbag

This Art Corner setup is obviously the Penguins from MARY POPPINS. But the overlay cel of a carpetbag is a complete stumper.

It's used to cover up the area where the cel is designed with a cutout, in front of the right penguin, for Dick Van Dyke's hand on the table.

OK, I get that.

However...

I have watched this movie dozens of time and no where do I see an animated carpetbag.

Anyone?

OK, animation detectives. Any chance anyone recognizes this one? (The lines are hand-inked.)

THREE ANIMATION BLOGS IN 2008!

Hello friends!

If you love traditional animation, there will be lots for you to enjoy in the coming year. I will simultaneously generate material for three animation blogs.

My career is in the entertainment world, as a professional musician.

However, my avocation is animation art, with a primary focus on vintage Disney productions. I've been collecting for more than a decade. And my interest is far from casual. I've read (and own) nearly every book on animation art. I continue to be amazed by the miracle of drawings that move.

This blog, NAME THIS TOON will continue to be the place I'll share unknown cels, with posts once or twice a week. In particular, vintage cels sold at Disneyland's Art Corner around 1960 often have unusual combinations of familiar characters. Artwork from early Disney TV (Mickey Mouse Club, Wonderful World Of Color and educational shorts) are often the most difficult to identify.

Your assistance is MUCH appreciated! Your comments will help me catalog my artwork for future animation enthusiasts. Please comment... even an educated guess will be welcome.

Recently, I've been considering how to best share research I've done, and images of my digital background re-creations as well as my final cel setups.

So here's what I've come up with!

ANIMATION BACKGROUNDS will continue to focus on classic animation background art. My goal is to post daily, as my time permits.

My brand new blog, CELS AND SETUPS will be of special interest to animation art collectors. It is here that I will show the entire process of acquiring a cel, having it restored, researching and creating a master key background, and then share the final finished setups (cels with their digitally re-created key master backgrounds).

I hope you'll enjoy my efforts. Animation art is a joy, a passion... and what is better than sharing that joy with others?

Happy New Year!

CHIP AND DALE Times Two!

I recently acquired these Disneyland Art Corner setups. Honestly, some of the combinations they put together were so bizarre! The strangest I ever had was a "Wonderful World Of Disney" Tinkerbell, with either Huey, Dewey or Louie, and a print background from Sleeping Beauty!!!

These setups are pretty weird, too. But the cels are terrific. You probably know Dale has a red nose (and usually buck teeth). Chip has a dark nose (like a chocolate chip).

So these setups are, instead of CHIP and DALE, Chip and Chip & Dale and Dale!

The cels are bought and paid for but have not yet arrived. Having not seen the pieces in person, I don't know if they are hand inked or xerographic.

Sorry about the poor quality images. Not my scans!

And forget the backgrounds as clues. The Chip/Chip setup has a Sleeping Beauty print B/G (they must have had a lot of those). The Dale/Dale I believe to be a print B/G from one of the short subjects.

I am assuming each setup is two cels (two-character Art Corner setups usually are). Each Chip/Dale could even be from one of four completely different films!

Take a look. You get a Gold Star if you can help with this one!

Can you name this WOODSTOCK?

Melendez Studios produced the Peanuts animated films. Can anyone identify the film that featured this "fiddler" Woodstock?
